Benefits of citing data

Research data are increasingly recognized as primary research results. For this reason, there are many benefits of citing the data:

  • It provides recognition both to the author of the data sets, and to those who manage them, and reduces the danger of plagiarism
  • It allows locating and accessing the data set more easily to reproduce or verify the results and favors the reuse of the research
  • It increases transparency and the production of higher quality datasets
  • Connect research data with associated publications
  • It facilitates obtaining metrics on its use and impact on research

Funding agencies are expected to incorporate them into research evaluation and recognition systems.
